Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional; walnuts or pecans)
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (optional; dark or milk chocolate)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your workspace by clearing the countertop and lining a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a heavy saucepan over medium heat, combine butter, sugar, corn syrup, and salt. Stir continuously until bubbling and golden brown, about 10 minutes.
  3. Use a candy thermometer to check that the mixture reaches 300°F (150°C).
  4. If using, quickly fold in chopped nuts before pouring the mixture onto the prepared baking sheet. Spread evenly.
  5. If desired, sprinkle chocolate chips on top while the toffee is warm, allowing them to melt slightly before spreading.
  6. Let the toffee cool completely at room temperature before breaking it into pieces.
